Explanation
of “Balances” Page
It can be confusing, especially for clients with margin accounts.
-
Long Market Value – Value of stocks and mutual funds you hold, but
not money markets.
-
Short Market Value – Value of short positions.
-
Money Market Balance - Value in money market accunt, but it
does not consider checks you have written or trades that have not settled.
-
Cash Available – For people without margin, it equals the money
market balance less buy trades, plus sell trades, plus dividend or checks
deposited that haven’t been swept to your money market account.
Brokerage Account Assets – Combines Long Market Value and Cash
Available. (You can’t use Money Market Values because you may have bought
stocks that haven’t been paid for out of your money market account.) It
ignores the value of private investments that have no current market value
like private REITs and partnerships.
